Our students’ love for reading and learning is nurtured and built through the school library. As a cornerstone in the school community, the library serves as a resource for teachers, a classroom for students, and a collaborative epicenter drawing in parents and community leaders. We are partnering with the entire school community in providing our students with the lifelong information literacy and 21st century skills they will need to live successful and fulfilling lives in this advancing, digital world. Library programs and services should engage all students and excite them to continue reading and learning. As a school librarian, I am dedicated to protecting my students’ rights to equitable access of resources and digital freedom. The library serves as a safe space where students can seek solace through navigating resources that inspire them and help them overcome obstacles. Limiting students’ access to resources because they may be controversial or not on their assigned reading level, in turn limits their ability to develop diverse perspectives and frames of reference as the future leaders of our society. All students should be able to find resources in the library that inspire them, and that they are able to seem themselves reflected in. School librarians have been given the responsibility of providing resources that foster the growth of young minds, and this can only be done through effectively protecting students’ intellectual freedom.
